Founded in 1972, The Museum House of Humour and Satire is an international institution that gathers, collects, studies and exhibits humorous and satirical works of art and cultural expressions, including cartoons, paintings, photographs, sculptures, posters, litarary texts and verbal humour. The Museum is located in Gabrovo, Bulgaria and hosts a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions on its four floors. Its motto is "The world lasts because it laughs". The Museum's art collection includes over 51 620 works of art by over 9000 authors from 173 countries. Among them there are 22 000+ caricatures, 3000+ satirical graphics, 1000+ picture works, 1000+ sculptures, 9500+ photographs, 200+ posters and some 300 carnival masks and costumes. Another part of the museum collection is a dedicated library of 25 000 titles and 1000 volumes of periodicals in 35 languages. A big part of those works of art are obtained through donations. The Museum organizes a number of events and competitions among which the International Biennial of Humour and Satire in Arts and the National Meeting of Story and Joke-tellers Blagolazh.
