The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria (UDB/SGB) was established on 12 July 1934 in order to unite deaf people and to protect their right to quality life and equal access to information, employment and education. With its over 80-year history, the Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria is among the most long-lasting organisations of people with disabilities in the country. The main objectives and tasks of the UDB are set out in its statutes and include: encouraging, assisting and supporting deaf citizens in Bulgaria in order to integrate them into society. The UDB funds the only Center for Early Rehabilitation of Speech for children under the age of three in Bulgaria. Its headquarters in Sofia functions as a base for the training of teachers at the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski "​. The other centers that operate are located in Varna, Pleven, Stara Zagora and Haskovo. To date, more than 6,500 deaf and hard of hearing people are divided in 12 regional organisations in the cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Pleven, Shumen, Yambol, Rousse, Stara Zagora, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Bourgas, Dupnitsa and Haskovo. The organisational activity of the UDB is carried out in 54 day centers for communication and social integration, covering 240 municipalities. Day care centers are based on regional and 42 territorial deaf organizations. Over the years, the UDB holds tradition of holding national seminars with leaders from regional organizations, representatives of different clubs, as well as representatives of the Youth Organization under the Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria (YOUDB/MOSBG).
